When a couple or family reaches out to chat about their photo session, they sometimes ask if they can bring their pup or pups. Sometimes they don't and it's not until we meet up that they mention their pup, thinking belatedly they should have included him or her. I absolutely adore dogs and any chance I have to capture them with their people is the best!! Bring your dogs!!! To your family session, to your engagement session, to your wedding!! They are family. They love you unconditionally. And those photos will be with you always, forever. Let that time together be something they're apart of! The only downside to bringing your dog is that I may fawn over your pup, or greet your pup before I greet you lol!! The upside (aside from the amazing images we'll capture together), if I want to catch a shot of just the humans, I'll happily put a foot through the leash handle and keep your pup safe by my side while I've got you laughing and am capturing those smiles! I love a pup assistant ;)

Senior year is such an exciting time and this year, thinking outside the box to make the year more memorable is key! Planning for a senior portrait session beyond the picture day offered through school is an ideal way to add a fun and in-person experience to your senior year that you will always remember!

Booking your senior portraits with me means you'll get a custom experience and one-of-a-kind images that showcase your individual style and unique personality! It also means you'll have a fun time!

It was more recently that I was drawn to senior portrait photography. Just the first two sessions opened my eyes to how much fun photographing seniors can be!! I'm a complete dork, so if you're not cool hanging with a mid-aged mother of three who will try to use the word "newb" or "legit" during the session, I may not be the right fit for you! However, if you're game for laughing, exploring and creating photographs that represent who you are, embrace your interests and believe that during our session my goal is for you to feel amazing and excited about a highlight experience of your senior year, I am just the right photographer to capture your once in a lifetime senior portraits!! And, believe it, I can't wait!!

THE EXPERIENCE

Senior pictures at school are so very different from a session with me! You'll likely choose one of those photos for the yearbook, in fact it may even be required by your school. I'm pretty sure the Downingtown East and West as well as STEM yearbook editors use portraits from the in school picture day. Truthfully, even as a photographer, I will always purchase at least one print of my boys each year from the school photographer- it guarantees the same exact pose, same held tilt and same cheesy smile so I can see the changes in them from year to year lol! But those photos don't show their personaliities and my guess is that yours isn't represented in those either. They're a classic, but seeking out a personalized senior portrait experience is so much more exciting and representative of who you are! During your session, my goal is to create amazing images together that capture your personality and incorporate your interests! Yes, I encourage you to bring along any items that are important to you, whether that's a stack of your favorite books, your crochet hook and yarn, your lacrosse stx and helmet or your bat and glove. Time is completely on our side (because I never ever wrap up a session unless I feel we've captured all of the shots that showcase who you are!) There's no line of students waiting their turn, and I never walk away when the time is up.

I begin every single session with some warm-up shots, that first spot I have us stop to get those first snaps out of the way to allow us both to relax into our time together. While I get my settings figured out, you'll have that time to get settled and used to being in front of the camera. From there our time together will be so much fun- we will laugh, we will play, we will make sure to capture those key shots and then we will get creative! I absolutely love exploring the space where we meet and while I will bring my ideas to guide the session, be prepared to walk a lot and to stop here and there as we find spaces to capture photos with a variety of backgrounds and light. Throughout the session, I'm looking to take photos that are closer up, steps away and also show you in the setting.

BEFORE YOUR SESSION

Before we even meet, I'll introduce myself and get to "meet" you with a questionnaire that helps me know what your interests are, what your future plans are AND what is most important to you with your senior photos in mind. From there, we can jump on a call, video chat, email or text back and forth (whatever you prefer!) to discuss outfits, locations, and themes. Whether you'd like an urban vibe or natural backdrop for your images, I have a ton of ideas on locations and will work with you to find the perfect spot to compliment your uniqueness! It is my goal that you arrive at your senior portrait session feeling prepared and good about capturing this time! Most seniors feel a little nervous when they climb out of the car. Makes sense, not everyone has a photo shoot all about them on a regular basis. But I don't think you'll feel those nerves for long! Before we meet, please know that I honestly enjoy the time we'll spend together! It is so nice to be able to have conversations with young people who are in such an exciting place in their lives! I love to hear my seniors' plans, where they may travel after graduation, what they plan to pursue. It's exciting!!

A MIX OF POSED & CANDID

I capture a mix of posed and candid photos, keeping it as natural and authentic as possible. I do provide guidance when needed to capture a shot I have in mind or to help you with a pose you might have in mind. And, I welcome and encourage your ideas!! I want to capture the shots that you know you want while also surprising you with the ideas I bring to your senior portrait experience!

When we meet up, we'll chat as we move throughout the location, stopping in spots that catch our eyes, looking for awesome backdrops or light. It's really an hour spent hanging out and snapping photos along the way. I'm always sure to have a space figured out for outfit changes if you want to plan for that. I think the most important thing for you to know coming into your senior portrait experience with me is- don't worry about how you're going to act or pose - I'll walk you through everything and after just a short bit of time together, you'll feel settled in and comfortable and crazy excited to see what we capture together!!

Beyond the session: prints and albums

After our time together, I do my absolute best to get some previews to you as quickly as possible so you can see how you rocked your senior photos! When your final images are ready, within two weeks of our session, I'll send you a gallery of high resolution digital images, ideal for printing and within that gallery, a separate set of web ready images for sharing on social media or just having on hand on your phone.

**One to One Gratitude sessions for Front Line Essential workers**

I am honored to announce that I am offering One to One Gratitude sessions for Front Line Essential Workers.

I am fortunate. Many of us are fortunate. We are able to stay put and to socially distance. But so many people are on the front lines of this pandemic, working selflessly, sacrificing their time with their own families to help others. My skill is not essential and yet I have been trying to figure out how to use my photography to thank those essential workers on the front lines, to contribute in some way. When I saw this movement spreading across the photography community, I knew I wanted to participate.

I am grateful. I am grateful to the grocery store workers, nurses, doctors, police, firefighters, first responders, truck drivers, farm workers, emergency childcare providers, pharmacists, USPS, FedEx and UPS drivers, all of the essential workers who are the only reason we can take care of our families at home right now. I knew I wanted to participate in this chance to thank some of them for their selflessness.

For every family or couple that books a session between now and May 10th, a complimentary photo session will be gifted to a front line essential worker of your choice and their family. If you’re not in a position to invest at the moment, but would love to be a part of giving back, please message me and nominate a front line essential worker that you’d like to see receive a complimentary family photo session.

All One-for-One Gratitude sessions booked will take place at a later time once non-essential businesses are allowed to safely operate again.

Intimate backyard wedding surrounded by family | Chester County wedding photographer

Theirs was an intimate wedding planned with their closest family in attendance to witness their vows and the beginning of their journey as husband and wife. The ceremony was set up on the bride's sister's beautiful property, under a canopy of leaves, sun dappling the fresh summer grass, a gentle breeze blowing the soft white fabric draping over the lovingly built arbor that would house their nuptials. There were tears of joy that day, but there was laughter too, so much laughter.

When Kristie reached out to me about photographing her wedding, she told me she was looking for someone to capture their ceremony and family portraits after and that was all. Perhaps my favorite images from their wedding day are the candid moments, those moments when the laughter was shared between a mother and her daughter, a new husband and wife, a daughter and her dad, a family...those moments under the arbor and while getting ready are the ones that stuck with me from their day.

I am so honored to have had the chance to capture Kristie and Matt's wedding and to see the love they have for their girls and how surrounded the four of them are by their families' love!

Supporting a local mama and her family through photography | Philadelphia family photographer

In February, a good friend and amazing mama went through an experience that changed the lives of her family, her children, her community. She had a brain bleed, later attributed to reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, a condition that is frequently missed in post-partum mamas. It's a condition that led to symptoms that seemed a bit beyond what she'd experienced with her other pregnancies but not urgent in the days leading up to the bleed. But as those days led on the pain increased and she experienced a couple of days of headache and intense neck pain, unable to turn her head. On the day she realized that this level of pain was just not right, she sought medical advice and was sent home with a diagnosis indicating a need for rest. Within an hour, she lost consciousness and was being sped to the hospital. I am sharing the nature of her experience because, as noted above, this syndrome is not often diagnosed. It's missed. Many medical professionals do not have this syndrome (reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome) in their front pocket when they're helping post-partum mamas experiencing severe headaches. Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) is a rare condition that occurs as the result of a sudden constriction (tightening) of the vessels that supply blood to the brain. The main symptom of RCVS is sudden, severe, and disabling headaches that are sometimes called “thunderclap” headaches. Strokes or a bleeding into the brain may or may not be present. For this mama, she knew something wasn't quite right and the level of pain she was experiencing in her head was beyond any pain she'd felt before. The road she and her family have been on since February has been intense, all-consuming and heartbreaking. But these months have also been filled with hope, so much love, family and a village, all coming together to support this mama during her fight. She is home now with her husband and children. She is again a part of the everyday fabric of their lives. She is present. She is strong and quite frankly, fierce. She has fought every step to get where she is. She is stubborn ha! and has not allowed the result of this misdiagnosed syndrome that nearly took her life, to change the woman she is. It makes my heart so happy to see her with her babies. It made my heart so happy to see her yesterday, four days past the final surgery that returned her body to it's complete self and to get a hug from her that was so full of strength and love. Lady, you are purely and simply Amazing.

These are some of the families who surrounded you, members of your village. Through these mini sessions, they supported you and your family as you focused on recovering and returning to you and to your family. To these families, thank you from the bottom of my heart for seeing this chance and taking a small leap to support this mama as she fought to be herself again!!

I sat down to write about a recent family session and found this beautiful bride and her handsome groom, their wedding photos waiting to be published on my blog! I still think back on Lolly + Travis's wedding as being a day full of so much love, kindness and family. These two were surrounded by their village, the people who hold them up and celebrate them. The people they love with whole and open hearts. I could see the connection Lolly + Travis have to each and every single guest, how special they all are to them. The words and sentiments shared through shared words and song were beautiful and heartfelt. The traditions they shared during the celebration were unique and oh my, so much fun!! I had a hard time keeping myself from hoping on the train that formed in the wake of Lolly's uncle and the wedding plunger as Lolly + Travis were plunged into a happy life together! I took in every single detail and hoped to capture the essence of this family's connection and love from the little details to the smiles to the hugs.

Such an amazing wedding day! I was honored to be a part of it and to capture the images that will bring the emotions back to Lolly + Travis every time they look at their photos!

My sister got engaged!!!! during a romantic weekend away with her boyfriend and their pup, Hero.

Nothing beats waking up to a text like this!!! ...

...when you've been waiting on the edge of your seat for your sister to experience this life milestone! Her (now) fiance, the man of her dreams, carried the ring with him, waiting for the perfect moment, and it was on their weekend away in this idyllic and rustic spot in the Finger Lakes that he surprised her on bended knee with the question she's dreamed of since she was a little girl and with the ring of her dreams. I love that she shared the intimacy of their engagement in the cottage journal....

Truly an amazing stay at Catharine Cottages. This place is one of the cutest places we have ever stayed. We travel everywhere with our 15 1/2 year-old American bulldog and the three of us enjoyed every minute of our stay. This cabin will forever hold a special place in our hearts because it now has become the place we GOT ENGAGED <3 7/22/18

I cannot begin to express the excitement I feel for them as they plan their wedding and celebrate the start of their married life!!

Kami and Gianni along with Hero met me in the beachside town of Manasquan, New Jersey in this amazing and dog friendly spot called Fisherman's Cove Conservation Area to capture their engagement photos with Hero by their side. I am honored to have photographed these images for Kami and Gianni to announce their engagement and to have captured the memories of this trio's happy time together.

As a family photographer, so many of my clients are families with little ones. But from time to time and more often it would seem, families with teenagers reach out wanting to capture their whole family before the kids leave the nest. These sessions are my favorite, in part because of the switch I need to make to attempt to connect just enough with these older kids to illicit genuine smiles from them. And in truth, my attempts at humor often fall on straight faces and disinterested eyes. But given a little time, they settle into the photo session experience, their expectations of a dull and simply lame hour are replaced with a bit of pleasant surprise as they find themselves genuinely laughing with their mom, dad and siblings. Is it the barn cat that insists on being a part of the shoot? Is it the inevitable trip and near tumble I find myself in? Yes, the cat helps.. my goofiness not likely! But ultimately, it's the realization that the time they're spending with their family is important and actually a bit fun :) It also helps that these guys' parents genuinely enjoy each others' company and laugh together!!

This session was mom's idea (of course) and the boys came along willingly though I later learned with very little expectations for a good time. After the session, I received the following text from mom-

My younger son "got in the car and said 'that was nice.' You have no idea how much he really didn't want to go tonight."

Her feedback is such a tremendous complement!

So glad this family sought me out to capture this time in their lives!!

Capturing Clementine | a family gathers in Kennett Square to celebrate

Spending a morning at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square with this family was so very enjoyable Alexia reached out to me again, but this time to photograph her sweet baby girl as she turned one and Alexia and Josh simply wanted the moments captured- the smiles, the pouts, even the boogies. They wanted photos their family of three could look back on to remember the year of first steps, teething, endless smiles and peaceful comfort. And she wanted photos of her sweet girl with grandparents, to share a morning with the people who love this little girl and cherish the simplicity of a morning together as well as the milestones. Family photo sessions that embrace family and the simple moments together are so amazing. There's no pressure on me or the family. Motherhood {Chester County family photographer seeks out the everyday experience of a mom of boys}

I get these things because they are roles I fill and have embraced over the last eleven years. This winter, I sought out the opportunity to gain a visual of motherhood from a different perspective. When I posted my model call, hoping to find a mom in the throes of early motherhood, I was pleasantly welcomed into the home of this mama and her littles. I spent just a morning with them, but let me tell you, it was a morning bustling with energy, full of excitement and curiosity and just that little bit of time gave me a sense of the experience this mama is living. She is calm, she is reasonable, she is full of love for her three boys. I was amazed and so humbled to experience their bonds and to see the ebb and flow of the individual relationships this mama has forged with each of her boys as well as the overall loving relationship she has instilled in them for each other. Motherhood. It's the "hood" I've dwelled in since 2006, sharing my body and then my life with my boys, one by one in 2006, 2009 and 2011.

It is a journey I'll experience, one that continues to ebb and flow with the days and years and it is the "hood" I'll dwell in for the rest of my days. It's after beginning the journey that I reacquainted myself with my camera. I've documented the small moments and the big events. I have thousands of photos of my boys. Many of those photos include my husband. Very few include me. Very few have captured ME in the experience of motherhood.

My 2018 intention is to explore motherhood and make this "genre" a part of my photographic work, to experience motherhood from both sides and to attempt to capture the essence of what it means to be a mother and to catch those fleeting moments in photos. I am ready to begin this new parallel journey, photographing other women as they live in their motherhood skin and experience the ebb and flow of these days.

I had the amazing fortune of meeting the beautiful mama (pictured above and below) as she waited on her twin babes to be born. Her calm demeanor and sheer wonder at the lives she was sharing her body with and would soon meet and share her life with were inspiring. Those qualities carried into the beginning of her motherhood journey with the arrival of her babies and I was again so fortunate to capture her, this time with them in her arms, during a simple morning. I want to experience and capture more of the motherhood experience through my lens. I want to give mothers photos of the everyday. I want to give mothers photos of the experience of motherhood that is the sharing of their bodies and lives.

A sweet family, a bit of silliness, and a beautiful morning in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania

I sat down tonight to look through photos and to write about some of the incredible families I met during my fall sessions and had the privilege to photograph and instead I came upon this, saved and not yet shared...

I'm not sure I have experienced a more perfect session start with a family than I did with this sweet family. It doesn't get better than to arrive in a beautiful farm setting to find one of the resident donkeys peering out his barn stall window at the lush and vivid green landscape spread before him. If I'm remembering his name correctly, this fairly new Springton Manor Farm resident, Jack, was quite a hit with these excited kids! They were enthralled by him and yet cautious, slowly closing the space between themselves and the barn wall. It's those moments of wonder and excitement that make being a family photographer so rewarding. Kelli and Scott were all to willing to let their kids enjoy the moments of this encounter. This family brought smiles and laughter and a simple joy in being together. I honestly felt like I was enjoying a morning excursion on the farm with these guys, my camera happenstance.

This is one of those sessions that has stayed with me. I have so many favorite moments and images from my time with these guys. I hope you'll enjoy returning to the warmer weather as you scroll through!

The locally iconic wall of the Great Barn at Springton Manor Farm beckoned me and this sweet family on a late August evening. Heidi knew this beautiful stone wall would make the perfect backdrop for her family photo. As we approached the barn, I was thrilled to find a beautiful, soft light, so perfect for her vision and mine. But even more, I was enamored by this family, handsome and genuine, ready to spend this bit of their evening together to allow me to capture them as a family. Family sessions like this are remarkably satisfying for a photographer. The evening and setting were ideal, but so were their outfits, such a bold contrast to the browns and greys of the stone wall and a gorgeous compliment to the rich hues of the golden hour grasses and sunlight. And the family, as a whole, was engaged and interested in allowing me to photograph them. The kids, not shy or reserved in the least, interacted with me through the lens. They peered closely, looking to see if their reflections could be seen, they were simply present during our hour together, enjoying their sibling time. I honestly do not think I can recall a sibling duo as happy to spend time together as these two little ones were. I could see glimpses of the big brother James will be when these two are older. No dating for Caroline! Equally amazing were Mike and Heidi's willingness to traipse around the farm, enjoying the evening and the experience. I am so very grateful for the opportunity to have worked with this family again this year!

Historic Upper Uwchlan farm + Remarkable Chester Springs family

A couple of weeks ago, I met a remarkable family. Three generations climbed out of their cars to meet me for a family photo session, their first family photo in years, at Upland Farms in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. I don't believe they knew quite to expect, and I can definitively say, I had no idea what I was in for on that evening. This was a family with genuine interest in being together to allow me to capture these moments. They were willing to participate, to simply be together on this beautiful farm. They were humble. They were genuine. They were serious, silly, curious and connected. And I was amazed. I was amazed by how engaged each and every member of this family was, with one another and with me and the lens of my camera as well, following my direction and offering their ideas. We settled on a time that would encompass "the golden hour" and on a location I had yet to explore and the result is stunning. I'm still swooning over the photos that came out of this family's session. And I am honored to have captured images that represent this family at this point in time.

Anny and Jamie stopped in Milito's Restaurant (http://www.militosdowningtown.com/) on a whim last spring. Their plan, to enjoy a delicious brunch alongside the Brandywine River in the old paper mill. They fell in love with the ambience and charm and their enjoyment of the morning fare and time spent together stayed with them. When Jamie proposed to Anny on Memorial Day weekend outside the Delco Courthouse at the very same bench they'd meandered by while enjoying a late summer art show in Media, Pennsylvania, the previous summer, the two knew that they would share their wedding vows in an intimate ceremony with their closest friends and family. The warm and pleasant atmosphere and delicious menu offered by Milito's will provide them with the perfect venue for their day, a middle ground for those traveling to witness and celebrate their vows and a fond memory of a morning spent together.

Anny and Jamie invited me to spend an evening with them alongside the Brandywine River in the heart of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, just outside of Milito's. Their good and genuine natures and the playfulness and obvious love in their relationship became evident as soon as we crossed the river. Birthday Celebration at Marsh Creek Lake with SKRS Photography

A good friend recommended this sweet family to me and though I was excited when mom contacted me to schedule their family session, her true intention behind the photo shoot was simply heartfelt goodness. This mom wanted to surprise her youngest with a photo session on his 5th birthday, knowing how much he enjoys being in front of the camera. She kept the session a surprise with her husband and older son too. I felt a bit like I was popping out of a cake when I climbed out of my car and approached the H family. The boys had shy little smiles and all seemed surprised by mom's stealth planning, especially dad! We took in a beautiful morning lakeside, the photos becoming more and more genuine as the boys and their mom and dad interacted together. I loved being a part of this fun and unique birthday celebration!

Teara + Patrick's St. Peter's Village, Elverson, Pennsylvania Engagement

St. Peter's Village is one of those quaint Pennsylvania villages I had the pleasure of stumbling upon not long after establishing my Pennsylvania address. I am always honored to be chosen to capture a couple's engagement, a families' togetherness, but to have the opportunity to meet with a couple or family again is humbling. I first met Teara and Patrick along with their daughter at Springton Manor Farm a little over a year ago. I was overjoyed to hear from Teara and Patrick again, this time for their engagement photos and even more so when they chose St. Peter's for the location. The day started out rainy, but by the time of our meeting, the evening air was fresh, the light soft and the village quiet and peaceful. Teara and Patrick have an easiness with one another and are simply connected to each other, so I knew their moments together would come with ease. We wandered amidst the historic buildings and centuries-old rocks of the Falls of French Creek in the Hopewell Big Woods as we captured these moments of their engagement. Thank you both for exploring St. Peter's Village with me! I wish you happiness, adventure and a peace together on your wedding day and in your lifetime together!

A Long Beach Island, New Jersey Engagement and a month to go!

Courtney and David are one of those couples that just are. They're connection is undeniable, their respect for each other mutual, their love for each other so very evident. They are one of those couples that just make sense. Two kindred spirits, complimenting each other, simply getting each other. I had the good fortune of spending an afternoon with them in Long Beach Island in and around the Barnegat Lighthouse. I knew of Courtney's connection to LBI, so despite the winter temperatures and impending snow, suggested we meet up on the island for their engagement session. And let me tell you, these two were incredible sports, climbing the 217 steps to the top of Old Barney, facing directly into the wind so I could get shots that offered a glimpse into how these two could weather a storm together. The photographs I captured that day, to me, are so very telling of who Courtney and David are as a couple. They are so full of love for each other and strength together. I am so grateful to them for inviting me to capture these moments, for allowing me to spend this time with them getting to know them. And, in just a month, I will have the incredible honor of photographing their wedding and capturing the beginning of their journey together as husband and wife. Saying that I cannot wait is an extreme understatement!! Their wedding will encompass those who are closest to them, and will be a day of celebration, family and close friends. Each family brought their own brand of humor or contagious laughter, an inherent sweetness and calmness, their family bonds, their family love. A year ago, with my Nikon strapped to my back, my bag packed with lenses, I headed into the cornfield towards Tom's tree ready to capture the marriage of two happy and genuine people. They carefully cut a path to the tree and as they'd envisioned, their families gathered to witness the beginning of their life together. Theirs was a wedding unforgettable because it was a celebration of them becoming a family. I had the good fortune of connecting with a Lehigh Valley photographer in early spring and in the Pocono Mountains on this beautiful May day, I donned my second shooter hat, prepared to help capture the moments of a most magnificent and unique wedding brought to fruition by two very humble, humorous and gracious individuals. On that day, I bore witness to a magical realm brought to life by this couple. I was nothing short of impressed by the special touches they brought to their wedding day to make it a true representation of them as individuals and as a couple. Their day was shared with family and friends and intertwined swords and cloaks, velvet and scabbards, castle and flames into the day long celebration. Add two great friends, a few kisses and a couple of flame-throwers and one could not ask for a more perfect and seamless wedding day.

A Pottstown creekside session with 9 grandkids to surprise 1 grandma

I first met Kim and her oldest son in the halls of our Chester Springs preschool, St. Matthew's. My oldest son and hers shared their first preschool experience and we as their moms navigated the halls of St. Matt's and the experience of sending our first sons off to school. It was a good year, a year of making new friends and learning how to let our boys go just a bit, as little as they were. We each have three boys and though we didn't find our boys in the same class after that very first year, we run into each other from time to time. I appreciate seeing her, knowing we started our kids off in the same place at the same time. It's a small connection that I appreciate having in my collection of little experiences as a mom. When Kim reached out to me to ask that I capture moments of her boys with their cousins as a surprise gift for her mom, I was humbled. It was so awesome to see how much her sons had grown and to see how much of a connection the cousins all share. There are nine kids in all that make up the ladder of cousins and their familiarity and comfort with one another was so evident and heartwarming to see. Upon arriving and making my way to the backyard, I was enthralled by the colors- rich greens and browns, the running creek meandering through her property. It was a child's dream made a reality. I could picture so many hours spent playing in the creek and alongside the creek. Three boys could not have a more magical space to call their own and to share with their cousins. We spent most of the session alongside the flowing water, some in the water of course. It was a whirlwind of a session and the kids were amazing! I could easily have spent a couple of hours with them, splashing in the creek, running through the grass and exploring :)

A Chester Springs family celebrates the anticipation of baby's arrival

Marsh Creek Lake is a beautiful setting at any time of the day. I was lucky to be asked by a friend to capture moments of her pregnancy along with her husband and young son there. She chose this beautiful Chester Springs lake because she'd captured moments from her first pregnancy there as well. She is beautiful, and I knew she'd be tastefully dressed and into the session. What I did not expect was how beautifully coordinated her entire family was and how much thought she'd put into the images she hoped to capture. She had gathered special items to help create the memories I was about to photograph and I had no idea how much fun using those props could be! Because I'm not much of a prop gal- only what's provided by nature or the setting at hand. We went to work together to check each image off of the list and were successful in recreating her vision while I remained true to mine.

I am excited for this young family as they move closer to welcoming their little one into so much love!

A handful of months back, I met with Wendy of Wendy Zook Photography in Bethlehem, PA. It was our first meet-up and what a treat it was! We wandered the streets, iron gates and fences, solid wood doors, unique entryways and the first signs of spring capturing our attention. And blissfully we had nothing more to do than converse from behind our Nikons as moments held us. We made unsolicited stops when something caught our eye, each of us instinctively reading the pause in one another's step, that moment of intrigue followed by the click. It was a perfect morning spent with a lovely person in a town rich in history and architectural beauty. Stunning day, really. Wendy captured me in action and for that I'm grateful, because I rarely step in from of the camera and if I had my pick, I'd choose to be unaware and in my natural presence. Binky Lee, a natural land preservation in Chester Springs PA

Spring. My boys and I explored the Binky Lee Preserve in Chester Springs, PA last week. We went on an overcast morning when the air was fresh, our surroundings the bright green of the new spring. Binky Lee is a beautiful local spot dedicated to preserving the natural area and bringing it back.

During our exploration of the Binky Lee Preserve we discovered an incredible presence of tent caterpillars (a term carried over from my childhood). I grew up knowing about these creatures, knowing their arrival marked the arrival of spring and the slow change to early summer. But never have I seen them in such abundance. Never have I seen silky trails, white veins, lining the trees' branches and trunks. I am in awe of nature and so very respectful as well. My boys and I were fascinated by the sheer number of caterpillars and tents we discovered but the fascination quickly gave way to an awareness of the destruction the crawlers possess. I'm not sure if their presence in such a tremendous amount is typical, but I do find myself wondering how the trees, their leaves just now unfolding, fresh, tender, how will they survive the devastation the caterpillars will undoubtedly bring as they grow towards wings? Our hope, of course, is that the trees will continue to thrive so that the mission of the preserve can be fulfilled and the land a walk back in time to the Pennsylvania wilds of days gone by..

In the mud kitchen, imagining and crafting amongst the pines in Chester County PA

In the Mud Kitchen. Inspired by Gems From Before, outfitted by Smithfield Barn, designed and built by Xavier and kid-tested and kid-approved by Gideon.

We live on a parcel of grassy land, an ideal place for three boys to run, jump, chase each other, kick a ball, play catch... I grew up on a parcel of land commanded by tall oak trees and tremendous maples. My siblings and I ran through the woods, created paths through the prickers, played hide and seek amongst the towering sentinels... my kids have open grass, but in my mind, they need the woods. The woods drew four siblings outside through lazy summers. We traveled paths to friends' houses, explored new areas, uncovered treasures from the leaf covered forest floor. In our yard, the kids find a bit of the adventure I knew as a kid in a line of pine trees, Christmas trees from years past. The kids have gravitated to the tree corner of our land as have I. And we've begun to explore, imagine and create together. Trees who lived full lives now adorn the tree fort as tables, cooking ranges and sitting areas. My kids mix and mash potions and soup, cook and tend to earthy fares, design and craft native weapons as they delve back in time with friends and each other, natives. I love finding them working and playing under the pines.

I advocate for breastfeeding and nursed all of my boys beyond the one year mark. I understand the bond that forms between a mom and her baby, and I cherished those moments with my own. Several of my families share the same strong belief in breastfeeding and invited me to capture moments of that bond with their little one. There is nothing like knowing that you alone can care for your baby. I have those moments in my memory, but at that time in my life, I did not recognize how special it would be to have tangible moments to keep those memories just a bit closer and clearer over the years. I'm so humbled to have been invited to capture these images for this mom and her baby.

Weddings, childhoods, 35 years...

I hold the camera in front of my eye to capture moments so that I can give families, kids, parents, grandparents, friends those moments in a tangible form. I do that so when they see that photograph hanging on the wall or turn the page of an album to see that photograph, they are brought back to that moment and connected to that moment are a myriad of memories, feelings, senses. It's remarkable how much one photograph can hold. It's remarkable how a photograph viewed 30 years later can bring an adult back to her childhood or how a photograph viewed 30 years into marriage can bring back the emotions of a relationship still full of laughter. It's why I pick up the camera. One moment captured. Just one can bring back childhoods, relationships, the days of pregnancy, the excitement and promise of a couples' wedding day. Snow queen less her snow beard

Snow queen. She looks kind of regal lounging there atop the snow mound. Funny thing is, this pup is not regal and less than five minutes earlier was racing around like the boys on that sled with a full on ice beard, while barking like a maniac. Sadie is not regal. But she is one of the kids and in ways she is the oldest watching out for her younger siblings. She was simply catching a quick rest , during a break in the action, despite her regal appearance. She was keeping a very close eye on the action unfolding before her, ready to jump in when things picked back up.

Sadie is our 8-year-old Australian Shepherd mix. She came to us at 4-months old through Safe Haven. She is the most intelligent, gentle, sweet and loving dog I've ever met. We are so lucky to have her in our family :)

The lookout, the vice grip and the smile

Blur. The photographer in me recognizes that this image is a technical train wreck. The mom in my recognizes the capture of a moment of pure childhood joy. My youngest son's vice grip on his big brother, my middle guy perched in the back, the lookout, and my oldest, a smile he couldn't fake if he tried. :) When I photograph my boys, I use those opportunities to grow as a photographer while creating tangible moments of memory. This is one of those images that I was drawn to immediately because of the emotion in their faces and the roles they're each filling on that sled. I kept coming back to this photograph because I honestly couldn't believe I'd captured their personalities as they careened down the hill, and I was in awe of that. My middle son is the lookout; he keeps an eye on his brothers and is a protector of my youngest. My youngest looks up to both big brothers, but recognizes the strength in my oldest and the safety and guidance he represents. And my oldest is the leader and also a protector. He's so aware of the other boys and as much as he can, leads by example.

As my awe subsided a bit, I allowed myself to view this image from a technical standpoint, to recognize that the focus fell on my lookout's winter boot and the tail of his coat. To recognize that the incredible blur wasn't due entirely to the speed at which they flew down the hill, but to my settings, an aperture that was open too wide, a shutter speed to slow..

Do I wish I'd nailed the focus? avoided the blur? Of course! Am I over it? Of course! The moment trumps the technicalities and that is purely good.

Looking skyward in New York City

B.K. (before kids) I lived in NYC. I loved to look up. I was always amazed by how much there was to take in above street level- intricate architecture, archaic water tanks, fantastical bird formations...this winter, I returned for a brief walk and as had always been the case, my eyes travelled skyward. At the corner of Park and 59th at the base of Central Park, I found this particular formation and a bit of luck (compliments of one of those feathery tails). It was well worth pausing with my camera on two counts ;)

A wintry Marsh Creek Lake for two brothers

Two of my boys and I explored Marsh Creek Lake earlier in the week. We discovered a very different image from our summer outings to the lake and this image thrilled them! They were mesmerized by the idea of the lake existing under the layer of snow. They were enthralled by the layers of ice pushed up on the sand and completely taken with the idea of chucking the ice slabs out over the vast whiteness. In the first photograph, "Heave ho!", Xavier was busy heaving slabs of ice onto the white top of the frozen water. In this second photograph, Xavier and Gideon, "Brothers" found themselves together at the end of the dock, a dock off limits to them in summertime. Such peacefulness and pure child joy. Sigh, that was a good morning. Though the moments alone were memorable, having my camera in hand was a good thing.

Jenny and Bob's Engagement @ Tom's Tree and Why Not Farm

I pass by Why Not Farm on Rt. 401 in Glenmoore, PA just about every day. And in every passing, I admire the beauty of the farmland and am awestruck by the sight of the longhorns languidly grazing in the pastures. I did not, in my wildest dreams, imagine that I'd find myself elbow to horn with these incredible beasts. In come Jenny and Bob, a young couple sharing a life a joy and simplicity with their little ones. They approached me a few months ago, asking if I would photograph their wedding. Theirs will be a celebration of the life they have together, embracing the ranch and the local area. We visited these places a couple of weeks ago for the engagement photo session and that is when I began to understand how much they are a part of this area, how its history is theirs. We spent part of the morning in the budding corn fields surrounding Tom's tree, laughing and joking and taking moments for Jenny and Bob to envision the summer ceremony they'll share with their closest family members. Soon after I had the unexpected pleasure of meeting the cow whisperer himself, Ray of Why Not Farm. He guided us to the back pasture to continue our photo shoot amongst the great long horns, belted galloways and Scottish highlands. It was an experience unlike any I've ever had and one that will stay with me. and I'm sure will be amongst the most enjoyable photo sessions I'll have the pleasure of shooting. I am grateful to this couple for being given the opportunity to capture the special moments of their wedding!! Folks like Jenny and Bob are who make photography so rewarding :) I can't wait for July!!

A stroll through St. Peter's Village
